An Overview Of Point Of Care Ultrasound Training

In point of care ultrasound training, the “Golden Hour” is one of the pillars of emergency medicine. Capitalize on the speed and accuracy of point of care ultrasound to take advantage of every minute. Using the point of care ultrasound training to evaluate the abdomen (the FAST procedure), first-trimester pregnancy, pneumothorax, DVT and cardiac anatomy may make the difference between life and death.

Point of care ultrasound is available at the bedside and is non-invasive, making a point of care ultrasound a natural choice for the initial assessment of trauma patients. Point of care ultrasound is also helpful in the intensive care setting. Point of care ultrasound can be utilized to assess hemodynamics. Point of care ultrasound can also be helpful in fluid volume management in patients with CHF.

The skills to evaluate the abdomen (the FAST procedure), first-trimester pregnancy and cardiac ultrasound may make the difference between life and death.  Participants in this course will benefit from “hands-on scan labs”, where you will practice the essential skills and techniques to acquire an ultrasound image for quick and accurate diagnosis.

AHEC has taught this course to physicians in the U.S., China, and South America. The point of care ultrasound training course begins with a lecture where faculty will review the basics such as ultrasound physics and instrumentation, anatomy, and procedures and protocols. Participants will benefit from our on-site scanning lab with live models for extensive hands-on practice after the lecture. The course content is based on ACEP guidelines for the performance of Emergency Medicine Ultrasound.

The three-day point of care ultrasound training program is a systematic presentation using an integrated teaching approach of lecture, assigned reading, testing, demonstration, and clinical scanning of models. Didactic training is reinforced through clinical laboratory experience.

Point of care ultrasound training allows learners to capitalize on the speed, portability and accuracy of ultrasound to take advantage of every minute. Having the skills in point of care ultrasound to evaluate the abdomen, first-trimester pregnancy, and cardiac ultrasound may make the difference between life and death. Utilization of point of care ultrasound at the bedside allows the detection of DVT and has proven to help reduce the number of pulmonary emboli.

Ultrasound Continuing Medical Education Course Structure

Usually, ultrasound courses are offered in one, two-, three-, four- and five-day sessions so that participants can choose the course that offers the correct number of credits for their specific needs. Each course includes a lecture component, a series of case studies designed to inform participants about common and uncommon cases relevant to the ultrasound in the course, and a hands-on module that gives all participants adequate time to familiarize themselves with performing the ultrasound on live models.

Point of care ultrasound training credit is earned by participating in a challenging and thorough course. Colleges offer the ideal ultrasound CME opportunity for physicians, technicians and other medical professionals needing a broader skill set. They are also conveniently located in the United States center, making their facility easily accessed from nearly anywhere in the continental U.S.
